What is so cool about Bamboo?
I’ve been doing some research on bamboo lately because I have been really fascinated with some of its amazing properties. Most people who are familiar with bamboo know that it is the favorite food of Panda bears. If you have ever purchased bamboo linens then you may know about its antimicrobial properties but there are some other amazing facts I found in my research that you may be surprised to know. Here are few things that I’ve learned that I just had to share with our readers.
Did you know that bamboo is considered one of the strongest materials on the planet? According to an article in Newsweek, Bamboo has a greater tensile strength than steel. That means it can be really hard to pull apart. Compared to hardwoods used for building, bamboo properties makes it a real good choice as a building material. For the same density of wood, the stiffness is lower but the strength of the bamboo is much higher.
Its Great for Agriculture
Bamboo plants requires very few nutrients and does not need fertilizer so unlike many other species of plants it can grow very well in some inhospitable places. The discarded leaves of the plant also returns nutrients back to the soil while its roots holds the soil together drawing water to the surface. This allows surrounding plants to thrive and can possible reduce flooding making it great for agriculture and the environment.
Helps the Environment
Plants and trees create oxygen by means of the process called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is how plants use the suns energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into the molecules needed for the plant to grow. Oxygen which is a waste product of this process is released into the air. According to some studies and research, Bamboo helps with the reduction of carbon dioxide and generates 35% more oxygen than an equivalent amount of trees.
Holds a Guinness Record
Bamboo holds the world record for the fasting growing plant. The record actually belongs to certain species of forty five genera of bamboo which according to the Guinness Book of Records grew at the rate of 35 inches per day. That is nearly three feet which is a growth of one foot every 8 hours. I would personally love to witness that.
Bamboo is one versatile product used to make so many common everyday things. It is used in medicine, for fuel, as scaffolding and to build houses. Its also used in many household items like paper, furniture, flooring, baskets, sheets, clothes, toys, rugs, and even utensils for eating.
I'm sure there are many other things that I have not included in our list that makes bamboo really cool and many other things it can be used for. If you know of any, please let me know in the comments. Either way, its truly an amazing product.
